conservative brothers. martin luther king jr. was under fbi surveillance until the day he died. government can be oppressive, vicious, ugly, violate your rights, generate propaganda. we need that, too. government can be affirmative, if they are helping poor and working people. government can help use its power for elites. when they come together with no accountability whatsoever, not just politically, but economically. let me say this. martin luther king jr. today could be taken to jail without due process or judicial process under the national defense authorization act because he had a connection with a freedom fighter, nelson mandela. he just got off the terrorist list in 2008. he had a relation to a terrorist. under the present administration, and you can take americans to jail without due process. the black freedom movement has always been suspicious of it. we have black prisoners in their precisely because they were willing to tell the truth that was a threat and we do not talk about them. that is why the culture of fear is not just violence. people are afraid. they are afraid to lose the

to be martin luther king, the holiday that celebrates his legacy. the senate historian gave a historical perspective. health varioust variou presidents treat the de. >>-- the various ways presidents treat the day. >> the constitution rights of the oath of office. -- rights out the oath of office. -- writes out the oath of office. most presidents say, "so help me god." there was a tradition, a folklore that developed that washington said, "so help me god." we as historians have been looking for any possible resource. we're not sure about this. one of the accounts was given to us by washington irving. he gave his ramparts that washington said, -- rememberance that washington said, "so help me god." most presidents in the 19th century did not repeat the oath of office. they just said, " i do," at the end of the oath. ,tarting about the 1880's presidents began to say, "so help me god." the chief justice who swears the men inevitably says -- them in inevitably says, "so help me god." it has become tradition. tradition is much more important than even constitutional structure in this process.

. it's martin luther king day. it just so happens that it's also president obama's inaugurati inauguration. neverthele nevertheless, i want to take a look at they key levels we're focusing on. we're seeing s&p 500 futures 1479, adding a couple of points -- i guess it's slightly lower taking fair value into account. the levels we're watching are 1500 here, more psychological than anything. as the s&p has been flirting with five-year highs, a lot of people continue to ask about complacen complacency. the nasdaq, the dow jones industrial average are roughly flat this morning and we will look in a second at their performance during president obama's first term and ask whether in some cases the doubles of these can be repeated. the cnbc ftse global 300 gives us a sense of overnight fractionally higher up 0.3%. the nikkei weighing on shares in japan. european markets are up .0 %. the ftse 100 is adding about .1% for its part this morning. we just learned that mortgage lending weakened in december. we get minutes from the bank of england on wednesday. we get gdp figures friday expect

championed the issues public safety and crime reduction. since the assassinations of dr. martin luther king and robert kennedy, we have pushed as an organization commonsense solutions to reduce the access to guns by those who simply should not have them. we have called for background checks for everyone who purchases a weapon, whether in a store or at a gun show. we have demanded that assault weapons and large capacity magazines designed to serve our military needs, but with no practical use on america's streets or in our neighborhoods the band. .. would move washington to action. once again we were wrong. but then december 14th, 2012, we all witnessed a tragedy in newtown, conn. that even after all of the others, we still cannot imagine. 20 children, ages 6 or 7 shot dead in sandy hook elementary school, six of their teachers and administrators. terrible, and forgivable moment in american history. we cannot get those lives back. we cannot get back the more than 30,000 lives lost each year to gun violence. but we can and we must act to help protect the lives of those in the future. this has

reaction here. u.s. futures did trade yesterday despite the markets being closed to celebrate martin luther king jr. day. they were roughly unchanged, not surprising given there wasn't much volume today. same story, there's a bit of hesitation here. the bank of japan, the big news out moving markets. but actually showing some disappointment relative to what has been priced in and what the bank of japan actually delivered. the cnbc ftse global 3 the 00 is fractionally higher. europe is kind of taking this move on the chin. we're down across the board, anywhere from .5% in paris to .9% for the xetra dax. this index was down 1.25% earlier. as to the discussion we were just having, there's some concern here now the bank of japan is being more aggressive. can it really support those levels? we'll continue to follow that. some top stocks to keep an eye on this morning, we wanted to focus some attention here. it's fractionally lower. this company owns a subsidiary in the u.s. called secureplane which makes chargers for the batteries that are at the center of the boeing 787 dreamliner probe. the uk
